Her work in horror films has earned her the title of horror queen. She gained fame for playing Marnie Michaels on the HBO comedy drama series Girls that aired between 2012 and 2017. The role garnered her nominations for Critics' Choice Awards. Her breakout came in her role as Rose Armitage, in the film of the same name, Get Out (2017).
